2018 NAIAS: Hyundai Unveils the All-New Veloster

Although the 2018 Detroit Auto Show is over, people are still talking about Hyundai unveiling their all-new 2019 Veloster, which is scheduled to arrive at our Hyundai dealership later this spring. (That’s just weeks away!)

The Veloster, which first showed up on American roads in the fall of 2011, was always a unique phenomenon — a sharp-looking sports car with a funky-cool, asymmetrical look thanks to one extra-large door on the driver’s side. It was this feature that ensured that the Veloster would never be confused with anything else on the road.

As the years have passed, the Veloster has evolved, but the most radical changes to the little devil seem to come in 2019, nearly 8 years later. Here’s what the upcoming new Veloster is planning on bringing to the market.

The “Re-Birth” of the Veloster

Hyundai calls the 2019 Veloster “reborn” thanks to a slew of updates and improvements over previous-year models. All-new no-holds-barred styling, inside and out, promises to make the 2019 Veloster stand apart in a crowd.

Air curtains on the front fascia are more pronounced and functional, and the previous cascade grille has been replaced by a more radical-looking black mesh grille. Larger fenders and a longer profile also set the new Veloster apart from its predecessors, as do the more pronounced rear diffuser wing and a lower roofline. And Turbo and R-Spec models are equipped with dual exhaust that look as sweet as they sound. Eighteen-inch alloy wheels are options above the standard seventeen-inchers, and McPherson front struts are paired with a multi-link rear suspension for enhanced driving performance.

Power Plus

The 2019 Veloster’s base engine has been upgraded to a 2.0-liter I-4, which is countered by an optional 1.6-liter turbo-four.

The 2.0-liter engine means 15 addition horsepower and 12 additional lb-ft of torque, for a total of 147 horses at 6,200 rpm and 132 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 rpm. Choose between a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission.

You can, of course, upgrade to the 1.6-liter turbo that delivers 201 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. It has been re-tuned so that peak torque arrives earlier (1,500 rpm versus 1,750). Mate the Turbo with a six-speed manual or a seven-speed twin-clutch automatic that gets sportier programming to hold lower gears when cornering.

Myriad Choices

Five trim levels let you choose the 2019 Veloster that’s perfect for your tastes and driving needs. Hold onto your hat: Word on the street is that the Veloster-N is coming soon, so if extreme power is your thing, the Veloster N hot hatch, with a 2.0-liter turbo that makes about 250 horsepower will make your cool little Veloster a true thrill to drive.

Step Inside and Be Impressed

An asymmetrical interior echoes the Veloster’s exterior, with a driver-centered dash setup that puckers its lips when you take a seat. Each new Veloster trim level has its own colors, materials, and accent pieces, so there is a lot of variety. Even so, all models sport that alluring modern edge with colored accents around the dash, steering wheel, and seats. A 7-inch touchscreen is standard and available technology includes:

  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • Satellite radio
  • HD radio
  • Premium audio system
  • Head-up display
  • Wireless smartphone charging
  • Navigation
  • Siri Eyes Free (use your voice to operate your mobile device or the vehicle’s sound system without being distracted by looking for controls)

You can also opt for Hyundai’s Blue Link system, a subscription service that includes remote start, remote door locking and unlocking, a car finder, roadside assistance, and stolen vehicle recovery.
