Meet The 2019 Hyundai Kona EV & Kona SUV

As that old tune from the ’60s so rightly observed, “the times, they are a-changing,” with electric and hybrid vehicles becoming a more common sight on America’s highways and byways. That said, many electric vehicles aren’t exactly known for their prowess on the road. Enter the 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric, which aims to change that perception in ways that just might surprise you.

Is The Kona EV That Good?

Yes! The experts at Car and Driver, for example, call the 2019 Kona EV “possibly the best mass-market EV” available today, and they’re not always known to hand out such lavish praise. Those critics, already fans of the gasoline-powered Kona – they noted its adventurous looks and powerful available turbocharged engine — are quick to point out that the 2019 Kona EV has somehow managed to improve on those qualities and then some. It’s just as attractive as its gasoline-powered sibling (which is saying a lot), and its electric motor manages to offer both horsepower and torque that outperforms a standard turbocharged gas-powered motor. Throw in a lower center of gravity, and you’ve got a truly athletic battery-powered crossover in the Kona EV.

Hyundai Kona EV Aces the Ultimate Tests

Electric Cars Reports notes that the 2019 Hyundai Kona scored big on two important fronts in the very first “What Car? Real-Range Tests” for electric vehicles:

  • The Kona Electric achieved a ‘real-world’ figure of 259 miles on a single charge. That’s the longest driving range on a single charge of any crossover tested.
  • The Kona Ioniq Electric also scored the highest result for electric car efficiency, traveling 3.9 miles for every kWh of energy.

The mighty Kona Electric achieved these amazing results in tests conducted at the Millbrook Proving Ground test track where it outperformed more than a dozen of its rivals. (For reference, the “What Car? Real Range” testing is the equivalent of its standard True MPG tests for traditional internal combustion powered vehicles.)

As if these honors weren’t amazing enough, the Kona EV has just been awarded the NACTOY (North American Car Utility and Truck of the Year) at the 2019 Detroit Auto Show. That’s one of the most prestigious honors in the industry and is based on things like innovation, overall design, safety, handling and customer satisfaction.

Safety & Tech: Hyundai Kona’s Lasting Impression

The Hyundai Kona Electric can perform on the road, but that’s only part of its story. It also boasts advanced safety features like Hyundai’s Forward-Collision Avoidance Assist and Lane Keeping Assist, as well as a 7-inch information cluster above the center console which serves to keep you aware of the status of the battery charge, along with the synergy between the drivetrain components.

A super-fast charger, plus anti-lock brakes with braking assist feature, are also standard features on base SEL models. The aptly-named Ultimate Kona features added comfort features like ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel for those nippy morning commutes, plus extra safety features like Parking Distance Warning to guard against fender-benders and parallel-parking mishaps. The Limited and Ultimate models also include nifty features like a power tilt-and-slide sunroof, LED headlights, leather upholstery, and a power driver’s seat with lumbar adjustment. Who said an electric crossover needs to be boring just because it’s eco-conscious?

Choose from seven luscious colors, and we guarantee you’ll be driving the best electric SUV in the Kansas City area, hands down!

Not Looking for an EV? No Worries!

Maybe you’re just not in the market for an electric vehicle right now. Not to worry, because the Hyundai Kona EV has, as mentioned earlier, a sibling in the gas-powered Kona. The Hyundai Kona is one of the best crossover SUVs on the road today, as Consumer Reports labels it as playful to drive, snazzy in its styling, and extremely versatile for a small SUV. The latest Hyundai Kona is also noted as being much more “enjoyable to drive than either the Chevrolet Trax or the Honda HR-V,” which are two of its main rivals in the segment.

With seating for five, available all-wheel drive, and a choice of two peppy engines (a 1.6-liter turbo or a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder), the Hyundai Kona deserves a serious look if you’re in the market for a small, versatile SUV with the get-up-and-go you deserve. Accept no substitutes.
