Driving 1 Million Miles: Anything’s Possible With Hyundai

Maybe you think you spend a lot of time behind the wheel. You probably can’t compare to Kansas delivery driver Farrah Haines, who recently notched a cool 1 million miles on the original drivetrain of her 2013 Hyundai Elantra.

“Reaching one million miles with the original powertrain in just five years is an extremely rare and incredible achievement,” explained Hyundai Motor America’s CMO, Dean Evans.

Not many drivers put the kind of stress on their vehicles that Haines, who delivers auto parts around the Midwest, does. In fact, Consumer Reports has a popular article on how to maintain your car so it will run reliably to 200,000 miles — just one-fifth of the distance that Haines coaxed out of her trusty Elantra.

“My Hyundai has been a great car to me,” Haines said. “Over the years I have been beyond pleased at my car’s performance, a quality that is inherent to the Hyundai brand.”

Hyundai Continues to Offer America’s Best Warranty

Since the late 1990s, when Hyundai first introduced its amazing warranty of 10 years and 100,000 miles on its vehicles’ powertrains, the company continues to outshine other manufacturers. To compare, Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Chevrolet all offer a much lower 5-year, 60,000-mile powertrain limited warranty. Hyundai’s warranty even bests luxury brand Lexus with its 6-year, 70,000-mile warranty. This warranty covers repair or replacement of most engine and transmission components that were originally manufactured or installed by Hyundai.

In addition to the powertrain warranty, Hyundai also has a 5-year, 60,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty — compared to 3 years and 36,000 miles allowed by other major manufacturers — and a 7-year, unlimited mile anti-perforation warranty that covers rust and corrosion. New buyers also receive a 12-month, 12,000-mile limited warranty that covers replacement parts and accessories as well as 5 years of roadside assistance.

Hyundai’s Growth As One of America’s Most Reliable Auto Brands

Hyundai has been one of the biggest success stories in the auto industry for quality and reliability. When the Korean automaker first introduced the brand to U.S. consumers in the late 1980s, the cars struggled to gain traction in the market. So, in 1998, Hyundai put its money where its mouth was, so to speak, and brought out a 10-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty. Sales increased 82 percent the next year.

Throughout the 2000s, Hyundai continued to increase its quality and earn a high reputation for reliability. The company won these designations from independent car review and rating firm J.D. Power:

  • In 2001, Hyundai was awarded the prestigious J.D. Power Chairman Award to recognize the automaker’s commitment to quality.
  • The Hyundai Genesis placed tops in the 2009 J.D. Power Vehicle Launch Index and won the North American Car of the Year as chosen by automotive journalists.
  • In 2015, Hyundai tied with Porsche as the best brand in initial quality, or how well the vehicle performs in the first 90 days of ownership.
  • Hyundai displayed the highest improvement in quality in a single year, leapfrogging from 19th in the J.D. Power 2016 Vehicle Dependability Study to sixth in 2017.

Today, Hyundai continues to be one of the 10 best-ranked auto brands as measured in the J.D. Power 2019 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study.

Delivery driver Haines is such a unique case that Hyundai engineers were dispatched to check her vehicle. They ran tests to validate her odometer reading and the car’s engine to ensure it hadn’t been replaced; they also pulled her service records and ran a Carfax report. After confirming that Haines’ Elantra had, indeed, recorded more than 1 million miles on the road, Hyundai officials presented her with a brand-new 2019 Elantra.
