The second half of 2019 has already been a tough pill to swallow: tornadoes ravaged parts of the Kansas City region, a 20-foot-deep sinkhole magically dug itself into Gillham Road, and The Office is officially leaving Netflix’s streaming repository. Breathe and stay positive, fellow Kansas Citians, as KC does have some fun summer activities going on to lighten the mood. If you’ve been stuck spinning in the depressing news cycle, it’s time to break free at these great Kansas City events this summer.
Main Street Music Festival
Hosted at Washington Square Park on Saturday, July 27, from 11 am to 11 pm, the free Main Street Music Festival will feature 5 live bands, local vendors, food trucks, a beer garden, and a kid-friendly area with face-painting, crafts, and inflatables. An annual summer festival in Kansas City, MSMF celebrates the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act each year by offering guests an entire day of family fun. It’s one of our favorite family-friendly events in Kansas City.
CrossroadsKC Food Truck Festival
Who doesn’t like a good food truck or two (or twenty)? At this year’s annual Kansas City Food Truck Festival, local restauranteurs of the mobile variety will be dishing out great food ranging from tacos to BBQ pork to burgers. The festival “doors” open at 4 pm on August 10, and live music, performed by the M80s, begins at 5 pm. Tickets to this all-ages summer event begin at $10, and guests under the age of 12 years are free (with a paying adult, obviously).
UNICO Microbrew Festival
From 5 to 9 pm on Saturday, August 10, every beer-lover’s dream comes true at the 11th annual UNICO Microbrew Festival at Zona Rosa. Ambers, IPAs, stouts, porters, wheats: This Kansas City summer event has just about every type of beer your taste buds could desire. Tickets come with a commemorative glass and can be purchased for $30, and proceeds benefit the Kansas City Chapter of UNICO National charity. So, find a DD to drive you and your Kona to Zona this August.
Ben Folds & Violent Femmes
Lyrical genius Ben Folds and ‘80’s rock icons Violent Femmes join forces to blow the proverbial lid off Kansas City’s Starlight Theater on August 16. It’s set to be one of the best summer concerts in Kansas City. Tickets for the 8 pm show start at $25.
KC Taste 2019
To the delight of local food
snobs aficionados, KC
Taste 2019 will take over the beloved Crown Center District on August
17, from noon to 10 pm. More
than 30 restaurants will be serving signature dishes from their menus, Cherry
Bomb will be performing live on stage, and celebrity chefs will be running
demos throughout the day. General admission is $20 and includes 10 “tasting
tickets,” so come with an empty stomach.
Melon Summer Smash
On August 17 and 18, residents of the Kansas City Zoo get a surprise summertime treat – smooshable, smashable, stompable melons. Watch the zoo’s animals gobble up every piece of cantaloupe, musk, honeydew, and watermelon their (big) little stomachs can handle. Pack your Hyundai Santa Fe with the kids and a well-stocked cooler, as Melon Summer Smash is included with any membership or general admission ticket.
Kansas City Irish Fest
First KC Taste, now KC Irish Fest over Labor Day weekend? Crown Center is busy this summer! Experience the sights and sounds of one of Kansas City’s largest summer festivals from August 30 to September 1. Nearly 3 dozen bands will perform in Cowtown over the weekend, and guests can even explore their own family history at the genealogy booth. Of course, there’s also an enormous children’s play area on tap. Tickets start at $7.
KC Beer Fest
Dreams really do(ubly) come true! If you didn’t get enough hops at the UNICO Microbrew Fest, try the Kansas City Beer Fest on for size. Hosted throughout the popular Power & Light District on September 14, the 11th annual KC Beer Fest will be serving over 200 – we repeat: TWO HUNDRED – craft beers and rare keg taps. Plus, there’ll be delicious gourmet food and live music all day long. This event is for adults only, and tickets begin at $40.
2019 KCI Cruise Car Show
As a local car dealership, how could we forget to add a summer car show to this list? (We can’t.) The KCI Cruise Car Show, one of the best auto shows in Kansas City, will be hosted at the Kansas City International Airport on September 14 at 3 pm. More than 1,500 vehicles will be showcased, including classic cars, muscle cars, hot rods, imports, and trucks. Best of all, this Kansas City car show is free to the public! Don’t miss out. (We won’t.)
Kansas City Chiefs vs. Baltimore Ravens
Why not put a lid on summer with a pre-season tailgating party at Arrowhead? On September 22, at 1 PM, the Ravens and Chiefs go helmet to helmet on the gridiron, and you’re invited to tailgate in the Arrowhead Stadium lot before (and after) the Chiefs get a “W.” We dare you to name a better place or way to end summer.
If you need a new SUV to help you make that tailgate party worth it, head to our Hyundai dealership near Kansas City. We have great specials on Hyundai models like the Santa Fe and Santa Fe XL, as well as deals on used Hyundai crossovers and pre-owned trucks. Contact McCarthy Blue Springs Hyundai at 816-224-7500 to ask a member of our sales team about other summer offers we may have available.
